Introduction to Big Walls
This is a two day class for experienced, multi-pitch trad climbers to learn the skills needed for grade V and grade VI big walls (technical rock climbs that take two or more days to complete).
I know how intimidating and overwhelming big walls can seem. This course breaks down the skills needed to climb a technical big wall into three categories: aid leading, jumaring and hauling. We will get hands on practice with these skills with the comfort and safety of a top rope belay every time we leave the ground.
Day 1
-Leave No Trace in the vertical world
-Strategies for grade V and VI rock climbs
-Preparing for wall life
-Basic aid leading (gear placements and bounce testing)
-Cleaning (seconding) and ascending a rope
-Setting up a basic haul system (lower-outs with a Munter-Mule)
Day 2
-Advanced clean aid climbing (hooks and offset cams)
-Cleaning and lower-outs (2-3 ways to lower out while ascending a rope)
-Hauling with mechanical advantages
-Space hauling
-Basic self rescue techniques
Participants in this course must be comfortable placing trad gear, building trad anchors and have some experience on multi-pitch climbs.
